Prince William talks openly about becoming a parent.
We're all told that having a child is life-changing, that your life will never be the same again.
Sleepless nights, endless nappies, baby sick on your clothes...
...followed by temper tantrums and soothing bruised egos, to teaching and encouraging our children to learn and fulfil their potential.
What nobody told me about was the possibility of our children sparking emotions and memories within us that I thought were either dealt with or that chapter was closed forever.
In an upcoming documentary, Prince William openly talks about how becoming a father sparked memories of his mother, Princess Diana. He chats about the effect this had on his mental health and the support he subsequently got.
If this has also happened to you take comfort that it is a common reaction in parenthood. It also may not happen in the early months after your child is born, more often it happens when your child sparks a memory from your own childhood at any age. I was absolutely fine until my second child turned nearly four.
Help is out there. Don't suffer alone dealing with memories, thoughts or feelings that you don't know what to do with. Don't let it take over your life and affect your relationships, your parenting, your work and your home.
